GI Bill Benefit

VA GI Bill® BENEFIT AT SAPD

Veterans with remaining VA GI Bill® eligibility are authorized to utilize their earned VA GI Bill®l benefits while attending the SAPD Academy as well as during their FTO period following graduation. The amount of benefit is determined by their eligibility based on their completed service time.

Individuals serving an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of:

Completed Service Time
At least 36 months 100%
At least 30 < 36 months 90%
At least 24 < 30 months 80%
At least 18 < 24 months 70%
At least 12 < 18 months 60%
At least 6 < 12 months 40%
At least 30 continuous days and discharged due to service-connected disability 100%

GI Bill® Programs and Payment Rates

Post-9/11 GI Bill® Recipients

The payment rates are as follows:
While at the Police Academy

  • Up to $1,820 based on service level
  • You will receive a one time books and supplies stipend of $1,000.00
While at the Police Academy

  • Up to $2,122 based on service level
On the job training/Probationary Period (1 Year)

  • You will receive 100% of your applicable MHA during the first six months of training in these increments:
    • If your standard 4 month FTO period extends beyond 6 months, at the 6 month period you will begin to receive 80% of your applicable MHA during the second six months of training
  • You WILL NOT receive book and supply stipend during FTO phase
On the job training/Probationary Period (1 Year)

  • You will receive 75% of your monthly lump sum during your first 6 months of OJT. You will receive 50% the following 6 months.

Applying for VA Benefits

Applying for your VA education benefits can be done in just a few steps:

  • Apply online today if you know which benefit you want to use
  • Consult with a VA Certifying Official at a local or regional VA Benefits Office—This official has application forms and can help you apply
  • Call 1-888-GI BILL-1 (888-442-4551) to have the application mailed to you

Once benefits have been applied for, that date will be used for back pay purposes once benefit is approved.

Example: Applicant puts application into VA on July 1st, but is not accepted until September 30 due to lengthy processing time, applicant will receive back pay for July, August and September
